On TagLish
My sister-in-law who raised her daughter Gabby to talk in English kept reminding me to teach Sandy how to speak in Tagalog. She said although Gabby knows Tagalog, she’s still having a hard time on her Filipino subjects. We don’t really have a problem with this because Sandy is very bilingual LOL. The Husband is right when we decided to teach her English first. He said Sandy will always learn Tagalog even if you don’t teach her since it’s the primary language used around her.
Anyway. I love hearing Sandy talk in Tagalog. I find it hilarious the way she pronounces her words. Whenever she speaks in Tagalog, I ask her immediately if she can say it in English just to test if she knows them both. Sometimes, I catch her talking in Tagalog with her yaya but as soon as she talks to me, she will change to English.
Just this morning while preparing for school:
We always watch Harry Potter or Hi5 to cheer her up in the morning.
Sandy: (just woke up) I want to go to school
ME: Okay. But let’s watch Harry Potter first while you eat your breakfast.
In the middle of our conversation, her yaya said, “Ate nandyan na yata yung tricycle” (Sandy’s service).
Sandy: I want to go to school!!!
ME: Yes you will go to school but first, let’s eat baby Oreo then take a bath. Want to watch Harry now?
Sandy: No, no, no! I want to go to school. The tricycle is there!!!
ME: (ignoring her) Ate Arlyn, please put the Prisoner of Azkaban ….
Sandy: Waaagg Ate Arlyn. Wala nga, wala. Wala naman DVD sa tricyle. Wag na lang.
Since we always watch movies when going out, she thought I was trying to give her the DVDs so she can watch it on her way to school. It’s really cute. It may sound normal to you but we’re so used to hearing her speak in English that we can’t help but laugh whenever she talks in Tagalog.

Just a tip, though. If you plan on teaching your kids both language, just make sure that it’s either straight English or straight Tagalog. Otherwise, they’ll get confused or worse, sound like Kris Aquino ROFL. (I’m guilty of this one)

inggit naman ako kay sandy, bilingual.. i read naman from n@w, usapang waldorf, dapat daw tagalog muna kasi you are shortchanging your child kung inuna mo sya turuan mag-english kasi matututo naman sya sa school nun.. kasi yung sa waldorf method ata tagalog ang unang tinuturo.. well, iba-iba naman yan talaga.. si estong kasi tunog koreano, minsan german hehe

sabi din nila ang batang bilingual dw mas matalino kesa sa isa lang alam na salita. hihi d k ko lang alam how true lala yan! lol
c lianne nung bata bilingual na.. ilonggo and tagalog (coz of my mom plus i also teach her the dialect) lol but when start watching tv around 2 yrs old.. aba nag eenglish na. lol we didn’t stop her coz we found it amazing to hear things that we didn’t teach. lol now she can only pick up and say the words and hard to complete the sentence in tagalog or ilonggo at all.
Sandy is smart kasi she knows when to switch her button to speak in english and tagalog and that’s okay.

Hi Joy, it’s really advisable to teach English to kids even at a very young age, since it’s the universal language. But kudos to you for not taking Tagalog in stride. We have to be proud because we are bilinguals. Dito sa US, pag naiinis kami sa isang puti, nagtatagalog kaming mga Pinoy para hindi nila maintindihan kaya napapag-usapan namin sila maski kaharap pa namin, hehehe. Kail is also growing up bilingual. We talk to him in both languages. Dito naman kasi, pag nag-school na, English is their medium kaya we have to make sure he can still speak and understand Tagalog regardless…
aliw ang kuwento mo, joy! alam mo, ganyan din kami kay abby. nung nanjan pa kami, we always talked to her in english and requested everyone to do the same. kasi nga, she is bound to learn tagalog. well, where are we now? hindi namin alam na aalis pala kami ng pinas. so kami na lang ang naririnig niya magtagalog. blessing na rin kasi when she started school 3 months after we got here, hindi siya nahirapan magadjust kasi english naman ang salita niya.
ngayon naman, baliktad na. we talk to her in tagalog in the hope that she will pick it up. ayun, nahahalo niya sa english niya. kris aquino? no naman. nyahahaha!

Yung boys namin dito sa bahay, we talk to them in English tapos yung nannies dito they speak minsan tagalog, minsan english but we told them no taglish. We always thought that they will learn tagalog in school and from their nannies.
But when we bring Dustin at my in laws every Saturday, they speak to him in Tagalog, hiya naman ako sabihan na English ang gamitin nila. I guess okay lang, once a week lang naman eh. LOL.
note: me note pa talaga eh. hubby is not really fluent in english but he speaks to Dustin ng pure english kahit minsan baliko at wrong grammar. he agreed with what i said, dito sa pinas prang iba ang confidence ng pinoys who speak fluent english di ba? i maybe wrong pero yun observation kasi namin. haba na. sulat ba to?

hi joy, i’m actually thinking of taking ninna back to pinas so that she could learn her tagalog. sa ngayon, i know that she can understand tagalog, pero she doesn’t speak it (except for a few short words). i have to agree din na if we’re to teach our kids a language, it has to be either straight english or tagalog. otherwise, she’ll just get confused.

alpha ganun ba sa waldorf? di kasi yan totoo sa mga kaklase ko kasi hirap na hirap sila magenglish kahit nagwowork na kami bwahahaha. ayun lang, gusto ko lang masanay si sandy, at least pag tagalog mape-perfect nya agad yun dahil sa dami ng nagsasalita sa paligid nya. pero tama ka, kanya kanya naman talaga yan eh. kung ano ba feel mo magwowork di ba?

hi meeya! thanks for the visit. why don’t you talk to her in tagalog na lang? or buy tagalog movies and tagalog kiddie books. you can ask a relative to ship some to you. there are lots of new books here in Pinas, including ang Alamat ng Pinya, Mga Kwento ni Lola Basyang, etc.
